BOT. Arbuste et arbrisseau à feuilles persistantes, voisin de l'épine-vinette, originaire d'Amérique septentrionale et d'Asie, dont les fleurs en grappes sont jaune foncé et les petites baies d'un bleu noirâtre, utilisé comme plante d'ornement. Alors [au mois d'avril] les mahonias du Japon, à la feuille de cuir, entr'ouvrent un peu du jaune de leurs graines d'immortelles (E. DE GONCOURT, Mais. artiste, t. 2, 1881, p. 376). Le mahonia bien que souvent en plein soleil, a meilleure mine à mi-ombre. Son feuillage plus brillant, parfois teinté de pourpre fait ressortir ses fleurs jaunes en janvier-mars ou mars-avril suivant les variétés (Rustica, juin 1981, n° 597, p. 12, col. 4).
